Description by David Jay Weiner:
“This project is a response to a client’s desire to build a small weekend house in upstate New York with stunning views of the Catskill Mountains. The area is known for its serenity and environmental uniqueness and overlooks the Catskills State Forest Preserve Park. The house is designed to not only respond to that environment but also to take advantage of the unique distant view of the mountains.
The house is conceived as a two volumetric enclosures that wraps and fold around themselves to form and define three major interior spaces and tie the house to the landscape. The primary interior space is used for living, dining and cooking. The two other spaces wrapping the primary space serve as master bedroom suite and a guest bedroom suite. Large areas of glass are used to capture the views, allow for passive solar orientation and blur the distinction between inside and outside. The house is designed to be relatively inexpensive both in construction and maintenance in the sprit of the Case Study houses of the 1950’s. As much of the site as possible has been left undisturbed.
The program specifically is for a modest weekend house for a couple. The house is oriented to take advantage of the views and includes a study / guest area, open living / dining area, master bedroom suite and a screen porch off the dining area with an outdoor fireplace. A large deck area is positioned off the living area towards the primary view. Construction is expected to be completed in the summer of 2009.”
